What to Do If The Police Want to Talk to You in Charlotte, NC

On behalf of Randall & Stump, PLLC in Charlotte, Criminal Defense on Wednesday, September 2, 2015

As part of our criminal law practice, we receive calls all the time from people that have been contacted by a law enforcement officer that wants to “talk” to them about a criminal investigation.  The investigator will often tell someone that “they just want to get their side of the story.”

The best advice is to contact a criminal defense attorney near you that has experience handling your kind of case, and have the attorney speak with the investigator on your behalf.   Most investigators will understand that you wish to consult with an attorney prior to meeting with them. Always remember that anything you say to a Law Enforcement officer will be used against you.  If the police want to talk to you, give us a call first.

During the investigation stage of a criminal case, the police are gathering evidence.  What you might think has little to no incriminating value to the police, can be the one piece they need to charge you.  Do not be tricked into thinking that speaking with an investigator or detective about a case will just make it go away.  A skilled investigator has undergone training in interviewing and interrogation techniques.

Finally, if you have been placed under arrest you have the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney.  Always make it clear to law enforcement that you want an attorney prior to any questioning.  If you have been asked to speak with an investigator  about a criminal law case, please give us a call for a free consultation.
